Why One Great Tournament Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

If you’ve spent any time around club volleyball, you’ve heard it before.

“She had an unbelievable weekend.”

Maybe she did.

Maybe she hit .450, served five aces in a championship match, or piled up 30 digs against elite competition.

Those performances are exciting, and they deserve to be celebrated.

But here’s the question every college coach eventually asks:

Can she do it consistently?

That’s where career statistics become incredibly valuable.

One hot tournament can happen for a lot of reasons. The competition might have been favorable. A player could simply have been on a roll. Every athlete has weekends where everything seems to click.

Likewise, every player has weekends they’d rather forget.

Maybe they were fighting an illness. Maybe they rolled an ankle the week before. Maybe they were adjusting to a new setter, a new offense, or even a new position.

If recruiters only looked at one event, they’d never know the difference.

Career statistics smooth out those highs and lows. Instead of judging a player by one tournament, they reveal hundreds—or even thousands—of volleyball decisions made over multiple seasons.

A hitter who consistently attacks efficiently over three years is probably making good decisions. A libero whose passing grades improve every season is clearly developing. A setter who continues to increase assists while reducing ball handling errors is becoming more polished.

Those aren’t lucky weekends.

Those are habits.
